I'm writing an essay and I need reasons why children shouldn't be exposed to violence.

Please don't write that they might copy what they see. I wrote abut that quite a bit already.

One example..
I know someone who was babysitting a small kid, and let him play a violent video game. The kid liked playing the game, but had terrible nightmares for 3 days after that.

Also, someone can become desensitized to violence, and therefore have no compassion or sense of civil duty to other people or even animals. They will see a fight, and will watch it instead of try to break it up. They will see someone torturing an animal, and will think it's cool. They will see someone being attacked and not help them. So even if the violence doesn't make them also violent, they will be guilty of being complacent to it, which is almost as bad.

Young, impressionable minds can be permanently scarred from the trauma of having too vivid an imagination. Their cognitive reasoning sometimes crosses the line of reality rendering them to nightmares, phobias, etc. which can stay with them well into adulthood.

Ask someone older how they felt when they watched their first horror movie without their parents knowledge. I'll bet you they were exhiliarated at the "freedom" to do as they please not as they were told, BUT, I bet they can still remember the sweaty palms, fast breathing..... the riveting fear they experienced as their brain tried to process what they were seeing.... Some still may have fears, phobias, now many years later...

I have a friend who will never, under any circumstance, watch or own or rent a horror movie because once upon a time she was scared beyond reason. She just knows she'll get that same, awful, terrorizing feeling again. It was uncomfortable and she could not control what her mind processed......

It's a fine line today in the world between "overstimulation, shock factor, and entertainment" . Some is obviously tasteless and overly bloody, etc. but not well-made so more fictitious to the mind. Most of the fairy tale epics of today slaying monsters and dragons are easier to digest as the mind knows these creatures do not live in our present world. It is the stories of common, everyday people, well-ensconced in normalcy, that when out of control, turn into horrific serial killers, rapists, etc. that sends us reeling because we rationalize that it could be the guy next door, or the lady at the dry cleaners. YOU DON'T KNOW for sure do you?!?! The human persona can be extremely guarded when wanting to keep abnormal or subnormal behavior hidden from what is considered and accepted as norm.. This is what is really scarey....

Because it leaves them scarred and they develope a low self esteem and never feel worthy of friendship and love. I look back at my life (had a violent father) and remember at school the kids used to think I was this snob and real *****, but it was never so- I used to put up this protective shield and envy them I envied children out of divorced homes the most (weird hey). I used to be ashamed of who I am and felt as though if I get close to any-one Ithey would discover my disfunctional family. It was horrible, beause I used to yearn to be normal and get invited to parties with the other coool kids, but kept them at a distance. I am now in my 30's & was chatting to a friend the other day (we have been friends since primary school), she told me that she used to envy me ast school, my body, hair and everything- I was shocked and sad and said- "You know, I wish you had told me that when we were still at school because I never saw myself like that and was very unhappy".

Just my input from a real life experience- hope it helps some

I believe it will desensitize the to violence, thus making them not see anything out of the ordinary with it.
