We really love the name Catalina.. but I can't stand the nickname Cat. I know that more likely than not a nickname will be used, I like Katey but in order to do that we'd have to switch the spelling to Katalina. What do you think would be the best nickname? Do you like Lina?

So many children are keeping their formal names. I think you can name her Catalina and not give her a nickname. When tell your friends and family that is Catalina and others will follow. I have a friend than named her son James. She was diligent when he was little not to let others give him a nickname and now he's 8 and known only as James.

I like the nickname Lina. I think that with the name Catalina even spelling Katalina you are destined to get a few Kat's.

I like both spellings as well. If you want her to be called Catey or Cate start that from day one. It will stick.

I like Katey with a C as well.

Good Luck! SD

It is your child and if you stop a nickname from the get go then there won't be a nickname you don't like.

I named my son Scott, but refused to let anyone call him Scotty. If someone did, I corrected them that his name was Scott, there was not nickname.

Do not change the spelling of Catalina to Katalina as all it will do is set her up to have her name mis-spelled her entire life. Lina is a cute "nickname" but why would she need one?

I love Lina. My only issue with the name Catalina is that Catalina Island is a really big deal where I live and the schools are always sending kids there. How about Katarina? That's Katey! Good luck!

You can keep the original spelling and choose the nickname Lina instead of Cat. Also, you can use the nickname Katey. You don't have to change the spelling at all. Like my name, Janet. people call me Jay. No one changed the spelling to Jaynet. So go ahead

Lina is really cute!

It's your baby - there is no law that says you can't use Catey or Caty as a nickname.

More often than not, the nickname will be said, and the full name will be spelled, so there shouldn't be much confusion. Close family and friends will catch on quickly to the spelling and nickname that you choose. Good luck and congratulations!

I like the spelling Katalina. it is very unique. I also like the nickname Lina and the one Katey. you will have to realize that it is still possible for people to call her Kat. However, I personally think it is best to give the child a choice on their nickname when they get older. they will definately like one better than annother.

Lina is a great nickname and you could still use the K if you fear the other nicknames.

If you call her Lina for short in the beginning, other people will follow suit.

Bottom line, name her what you love.

I think it would be pretty rare for others to just give her a nickname that wasn't intended for her. In other words, if you don't like Cat, I don't think people are going to just up and start calling her that. So that pretty much means that any nickname you want is just fine, or if you don't want to use a nickname, you can just make sure that people call her Catalina.

But if you're still looking for suggestions, I really think (Kae-tee) is a great name and you can spell it however you want: Caty, Catie, Katy, etc.
