Most motherboards will trigger an alarm when they get too hot, so it doesn't sound like overheating to me.
Blue screens and restarts are most often caused by faulty hardware or bad drivers. I had a Gateway that had a restarting problem, and the issue turned out to be a short that caused low voltage from the power supply. The unit would detect the problem and automatically restart.
The other main cause of restarts is driver problems. Make sure all your drivers are up to date.
If your problem isn't drivers and your laptop is still under warranty, you should definitely contact Gateway. Their track record on quality isn't very good and it is their responsibility to fix the faulty unit.

Well,i had a very similar problem with my own laptop,my laptop kept restarting randomly but i cleaned the air flows and it was ok after that, but you said u have had your laptop for only a week,it pretty imposible that the air flows have been blocked up in a such short time. The blue screen im afraid indicates that you have a serious problem within the operating system. Probably drivers but it could also be hardware mulfuction causing this to happen. Take it back as soon as possible and get it sorted out.

do you have it plugged in? could be an issue with your battery connection, and running multiple programs could be causing the power to drop out.
an overheat situation usually impacts the video card first, and the computer would tend to freeze up rather than shut down. your issue is probably related to power. check the battery, plug it in, and if you still have problems contact gateway.... you might have a bad power module, and they should replace it if it is that new.

Take it back now. This is not supposed to happen.
If you have in on a bed or someplace where the fan ports may be blocked this can happen.
Don't wast time getting a replacement.

The blue screen means that there is something major happening with it. Return it for a new one.

if you have your laptop on top of clothing like baggy pants, etc. your computer may not be getting enough air flow to the electical componets, you should try setting it on a book, or a binder, like i am doing now, my computer dosent do that but it does slow way down, until it cools down., i also listen to media player while doing stuff, like reading email, etc, and it slows down, i got one of those cooling mats and that helped alot.

If you have a malfunctin in your fan, your computer might heat up.
Also, the heat could be generated by a bad battery pack.
