It hurts not to wear them during the day and I can't read anything more than six inches from my face (anything further than that is a blob of color).
Is this normal? I've had them for almost a month.

you might have the wrong prescription id go back and check its not unusual to have a few days of discomfort or until your eyes adjust to wearing glasses but a month is to long and you could end up damaging your eyes if you have got the wrong glasses all the best ...

exactly; every year they increase the prescription ; the more dependent, the worse your eyes; when I was young , I stopped wearing mine and my eye doctor told me that I improved my vision by forcing the muscle to strengthen by not relying on the glasses as much; you are so right; the more you go ; the worse they become; great for them $$$$ - not great for us

sounds like the glasses are not the right prescription. buy a new prescription from the same place and tell them they never really worked and they should probably give you yourr money backso you can buy a new pair.
