I have heard from my heating oil supplier that people who have their oil tank outdoors MUST use either kerosene or diesel otherwise the heating oil would turn to thick molasses. Call your oil supplier and ask what they would fill your oil burner with if your tank sat outside in sub zero temps, and there is your answer on alternative fuel supplies.
From what I know, kerosene burns cleaner, but Diesel has many of the same burning properties as kerosene and heating oil.

You need fuel for hot water. I'm not an expert but using diesel fuel does not sound safe to me. Just take cold showers for now or go to a friends or family to shower.

Yes it can be done safely with diesel fuel, for a short period its ok in the long run it produces to much carbon..The later diesel fuels are much better then they use to be and have alot less sulpher content, it should work fine stay warm.

Yes, Home heating oil IS diesel fuel. It just has red dye in it for taxing purposes.

NO! it is not safe. Diesel is like fuel oil but it has additives and the flammability is different. Can't you wear a sweater, please don't say we have to do this for a child. As an adult you can just bundle up under blankets.
Better safe than sorry.

It can be done, but it is not recommended for long term use. Follow proper precautions in bleeding the system and good luck.
