XP works for Desktops as well as Laptops. Before you start doing this, however, consider a few points:
1. Do you have an OEM XP CD? (Original Equipment Manufacturer, such as HP) If you do, it is not likely to work, but you can sure try it.
2. If the CD is not OEM, but Microsoft, then it will likely work, but you are likely to have some trouble activating it. If you do not activate the license within 30 days of installing it, the computer will not work.
3. Microsoft has 2 types of licenses. Per seat and per server. A per server license will enable you to install the OS on multiple computers. They usually cost much more than per seat licenses, which normally only work on one computer.
4. Before you start, make sure you have written down the names and numbers of your sound card, video card, NIC card, and Windows key because, after you format the hard drive, Windows may or may not be able to find the drivers for these. If you have to look for the drivers on the internet, you will be very glad you wrote those numbers and names down before you formatted the hard drive.

There isn't a different version of XP fo r laptops and desktops no, so you're alright from that point of view. But, you're supposed to buy a license for each machine so what you're looking to do is illegal and will likely result in your license key being blacklisted and you'll be unable to download security patches from Windows Update.

There is no seperate version for laptops vs desktops.
However, as noted above, you may have problems acrivating Windows XP on two systems contemporaneouly. Depending on your licence, youmay need to call Microsoft and convence them that you tool Windows XP off the desktop.
