Your adrenaline may be too active at bedtime. When we are under stress and worry too much this tends to happen. Accept that your can't change what has happened already and be prepared to face the next day to the best of your ability. Try to figure out what may be causing your sleeplessness. What to wear is not something to overly worry about. Watch your food and drink intake as diet can cause the body to wind up. Give yourself a few hours of relaxation before slumbering off. Take a soothing bath before bedtime, read a calming book such as poetry, take melatonin or other calming herbs if need be. If after a week or so this doesn't help, go to the doctor and ask for a thorough physical as it could be an overactive thyroid or something else physical that needs to be taken care of.

For a better (and faster) night's sleep: 1) Exercise in the morning and no less than 3 hours before bedtime. 2) Stop with caffeine. Sodas, teas, coffee, etc... 3) Meditate or pray for an extended period before sleeping. 4) Eat a well-balanced diet. 5) Use a journal to empty your mind of daytime thoughts and worries. 6) Heat some milk and drink it right before bed. 7) Count your breaths while you lie in bed. 8) Get checked for restless leg syndrome or insomnia if you cannot sleep for more than a few weeks.

I have the exact same problem and refuse to take medicines as well. I've found that trying to make myself dream while I am awake helps a lot. Instead of thinking of the day, I'll picture something in my mind and go from one scene to the next like I do in my dreams. If I can do this without having something from the day enter my mind, I can usually go to sleep pretty fast. It's kinda of a weird process of unconcious thinking which is a little hard to do at first, but it works for me.

Avoid taking coffee or caffeine containing drinks ( softdrinks such as Coke or Pepsi) in the afternoon as these are stimulants.
Try taking a bath using lukewarm water about 2 hours before bedtime...or better still, laze in a bathtub.... then take a glass of warm milk. This usually works well for me, maybe it will help you too... Good luck!

Do you eat close to bedtime? Don't
Do you go to bed hungry? Don't....try drinking a glass of milk, or a turkey sandwich. A small one.
Do you work out in the evening? Work out when you wake up in the morning instead.
Do you drink coffee or caffeine drinks after 1pm? Don't.
Try to work on your heavy thinking first thing in the morning while you work out, or before you go to work. If you know at bedtime that you will give time to your thoughts in the morning, you tend to rest more soundly.
It won't hurt to drink a big cup of chamomile tea an hour before bed either. I never believed that herbal stuff until I tried it, and it really knocks me out nicely.

Your diet can play a role in your sleep. If you eat healthy then you will be able to fall asleep a lot easier than if you're not. Also try drinking a glass of wine or warm milk before attempting to fall asleep.
