Why does everyone think just because you get welfare it means you don't work?

All the people I know that get welfare actually have a job.

Because that's the "Straw Man" stereotype used by those who want to use the "evils" of Welfare as a political soapbox.

Instead of addressing the majority of Welfare recipients who are on it for a short person of economic hardship, they trundle out am image of women having a dozen kids all collecting welfare and doing so for generations.

The goal is to paint Welfare as a leech on the government and use it as a political issue with which to garner votes.

In reality, no politicians actually try to destroy welfare regardless of their political stance on the issue, as if it were to be eliminated, they would no longer have it as an issue with which to whip voters into a frenzy. They would also have to deal with the social and economic consequnces of making the nation's middle and lower economic classes that much more vulnerable to complete financial disaster.

First the politicians use this to take the glare away from the real welfare problem which is CORPORATE WELFARE, if people understood that on a comparative basis we dole out more to support corporations than we do to help the impoverished then maybe they'd see it in a different light. Also the other posters are right welfare is the Boogey Man and gives some a sense of political edge, the working poor have one of the ardest situations in this country and it appalls me when I see statements like get 3 jobs, what an imbecillic statement, greedy self absorbed bastards think that way not genuinely caring humans

You must live in Hollywood since here in Massachusetts everyone on welfare cannot get welfare if they have a legal job because even the minimum wage would put you above their limit..
See here Hookers, drug dealers, people paid under the table and illegals can get welfare and still go to work at their illegal job.
In Hollywood you could put your job as an actor or actress and collect since you are always out of work. Then are you telling the truth. I can show you people who have no job but welfare they call it SSI because they are too crazy or fat to work. I can show you thousands of woman who stay at home and are some guys ho but will not marry a working man because they would lose their free money. The dude is happy too because he only works part-time and only need sex but not his name for the kids.
We must live in different parts of the world or you are not facing reality or your definition of a job is different.Hookers, pimping, drug dealing, someone telling you they are holding up a wall are not jobs. Some and I mean some people who get help do deserve it but most do not. Welfare is not racist if you want to be a scumbag and steal from workers then you can no matter what your color.

Everyone does not think this. The reason it is suggested that welfare recipients are lazy and living off the taxpayin hard workers of the world is to steer attention away from the grim facts of poverty and the lack of success that the government has had in changing the situation. It is a way of telling the pay check to pay check folks that they have it better than the poor, so why complain?
