3 men went to stay at a motel, the stay in total was $30. They each put in $10. The manager then decided that b/c it was 4 a.m. when they checked in, he would take $5 off the price. He sent his clerk to give them back $5. The clerk said to himself, "they cant split $5 evenly so, I cam going to give them $3 and keep $2 for myself. So if the 3 men each got back a dollar. In total they spent $27. But if the clerk kept the $2 that would make it $29 not $30. Where is the other dollar??? I know 3+2=5. But when you look at the total of what they spent and what the clerk kept. Its doesn't make sense. There is an answer, I just cant figure it out. Does anyone know???

*9 X 3+ 27 what they really spent
*clerk kept $2
*27+2= 29 not 30????? Where is that dollar that totals the origianal $30 spent

It had nothing to do with 9x3.
it was the 10x3-5+3+2=30

3 men go to the motel, and pay 10 a piece. There was a discount of 5 dollars each person was given a dollar a piece. You take it from the total......30-5=25+3=28 plus the money that the clerk kept add $2 equals $30.

Here's your error: "In total they spent $27."

It's just incorrect. They originally put in $30. The clerk sent back $3 and kept $2.

$30-5=$25; $25+3=$28, not $27, and $28+2=$30. That's where the extra dollar went. Someone added wrong to trick you up, and it worked because you took the problem at face value. When you tried to figure out the ultimate answer, it didn't occur to you that the problem might have given you the wrong figure. It's a good lesson to always check out what people tell you and not to take things at face value!
