okay i have lived in Colorado (currently) Missouri, Michigan, and South Dakota, all of which have some pretty horrid winters, i have never owned a 4x4 or an all wheel drive and have never really had a problem, secondly i own a 2003 eclipse and never have a problem in the snow, in fact it is one of the best snow cars i have ever owned. third the new Mitsubishi eclipses have an option of traction control, that coupled with being a careful driver in the snow and they are a good snow car, i used to work at a Mitsubishi dealership and test drove many eclipses in the snow and never really had a problem, in fact mitsubishi mounts their motors in such a way as to put 70% of the weight in the front of the car directly over the front tires which are the drive wheels. that with traction control, and many of the other safety features that are in the eclipses make them a force to be reconned with in the snow.

Proper tires will be the biggest factor for you and driving in the winter. A little weight can help, but since you are dealing with a front drive car, and the weight is at the front, I would not worry too much about dragging your car and its fuel economy down by adding extra weight. The Eclipse is a sporty car, and as such, is not "built" to be a snow driver. Use caution in the winter and good luck.

Drive with confidence, Michelin X-ice winter tires should get you through winter without any problem. The X-Ice has very aggressive and deep tread. I use the X-ice on my Mitsu for winter(it snows a lot where I live) and all season Yokohama for summer.

I owned 2 eclipses in 2001, and could go any where with them. I never had to put weight in the back, and I live in NH.

If you are concerned with handling in snow, you should go with 4X4 like Subaru etc...none of the front or rear wheel drive cars are good for snow....

Well they're not AWD so it'll handle just like any other FWD car. Just get chains and you should be fine.
