There are two good ways.

The first is to use a USB "drive" which is basically a memory stick like you'd find in a digital camera. You can copy the file(s) to the drive, stick it in your laptop, and copy from there. (Or you could save the file there in the first place and use it in whichever computer ).

The second way is to use the network. If you have a broadband connection with a router, you can set up Windows peer networking and shared drives. With that setup, you could copy your PC files to your laptop very easily.

Hi, this is not so simple and not so difficult. I will provide you with all the information. Here we go.

To connect two computers, we need a cable. The cable should be a cross over cable. This sounds too techy, but that's the way it goes.

Ex: One computer and one hub can be connected to each other using a straight over cabling. However, if you want to connect two similar devices it needs cross over cabling.

Here is the configuration: The cable has eight colors in it. One end to one computer and the other to another computer. However, the cabling is done in such a way that 1-8 2-7 ...8-1. That is if green is the first color at one end, then green should appear at the last at the other end, This is cross cabling. However, when you purchase the cable ask the person to do cross over cabling so that you do not have any problems.
Once the cabling is done, connect one computer to the internet and automatically the other one gets internet even.( you need to create a network connection like direct cable ) which is easy.

This is a bit too much, but this is the best I could explain. Sorry if this does not help

If both computers have an ethernet jack (looks like a big phone port) you can purchase a crossover ethernet cable that will allow you to create a network between the computers. Connects at 100mbps.

If both computers have firewire/1394 ports can can purchase a firewire/1394 cable to connect them. The laptop would most likely have a four pin connector (smaller) while the desktop would have a (larger) 6 pin connector, so be sure to get a cable that fits. Connects at 400mbps.

If both computers have infrared ports you can use the Windows Direct Cable Connection utility to form a network. If they both have parallel ports the same software can be used along with the proper cable.

If both computers have wireless cards a peer-to-peer network can be established. Connects from 11mbps to above 100mbps.

With 3rd party utilities you can connect two computers using a special USB cable.

You can always use floppies, CDs, Zip disks, USB drives, etc to transfer files.
