It depends on what they have to do and what kind of dog. In general females are easier to train but males look more impressive but can be exceptions to either rule.
The Lassies were all boys because they had thicker nicer coats but in real life a male would have said " Sorry, Timmy, I smell some thing good over here, give me two hours with her and then I'll tell 'em your in the well."

Mostly males are used. Lassie was actually a male. The same with cats but sometimes females are used. It really all depends on which one does what they need it to do and is trained well enough for the part.

It depends on the movie. Mostly male though...sometimes female.Cats...i dont know, im a dog person.
