If Manager often calls staff members into the office to informall reprimand them. Is the manger by law required to give the employee notice and offer them to have a person of the employee's choice to be a witness.

If a manager is OFTEN calling staff into his office for a reprimand, then the manager is the one who should be reprimanded for failing to maintain discipline within his/her group.

If you are in Australia refer to the new Industrial Relations Laws, you only have five to read now, no the boss does not have to issue written notices any more - you should keep a written record of all that is said and try to include dates and times - as should the boss for his/her reference. Having a witness was a right but I think even that is now out the door.
And in agreement with the poster who stated that if the boss is having to reprimand so often then it is the boss who is at fault, if there were proper induction programs and on going up date training this should not be happening.

Not letting her take a 1/2 day on Sunday is not a fitting "punishment". If you believe her standard of work to be poor then rather than have some passive agressive way to "punish" her for speaking out why don't you try and address the real issue? Just because you make her more unhappy in her job by arbitrarily punishing her doesn't mean she will suddenly become a better worker..... Apparantly she thinks she's doing a great job. Has she had any kind of performance review where you have actually sat her down and shown her where you find her lacking? Chances are that she feels she is working herself to the bone and you do not give her proper recognition. I totally believe you when you say she is incompetent, but because you have not given her proper constructive criticism she does not see this.....it sounds like you are a very hands off kind off boss, especially since you mentioned that your employees should make appointments before coming to see you. I think the best thing to do is rather than continuing to stew and be frustrated you need to make clear your expectations for her performance and how EXACTLY you need her to improve. If she is not living up to your standards after your talk FIRE HER!!!!!! Do not passively agressively "punish" her....this will solve the problems for neither of you and only cause more resentment on both sides. You have created this monster by not addressing your issues with her in a way she will understand. Tell her I see you lacking in A, B, and C. Specific things and examples. Do not be vague. Tell her exactly where you have seen mistakes in the past and then give her X, Y, and Z of how you expect her to improve. Good luck, I hope you decide to handle this rather than playing games!

No, absolutely not. They don't even need to give you notice if the formally reprimand you or fire you.

No, However such provisions may be in company policies or contracts. Check with your union representative if your a member of a union.
