The Forest reflected/responded to the emotional health of the village. When the villagers began keeping secrets, hardening their hearts, bartering with their souls, whatever you want to call it for their sudden personality changes in recent times...the forest began to change too. I don't know the how or the why just that it corresponded with the lives/lifestyles of the villagers.

In "messenger" the trade mart could be used as a enemy to the common man, like "teacher" who gave away who he was for love and Matty's friend whose family sacrificed for a gaming machine.

As for the forest im not sure counting it as an enemy would make sense. If anyone is the enemy if would be the villagers who were putting up the wall for I believe that was why the forest was angry.
