Ok, I've done extensive looking up Spirulina, and it remains controversial. I barely started taking it 3 days ago, and I bought it from GNC. In the label it says 1 pill a day but that is only 500 mg. On all of these websites it says anywhere from 2-10 grams, so what is up with this? I take 2 anyways. Can we star this question please because I want a lot of people to answer this question. Are the big government companies trying to keep this superfood down or something to protect their investments in drugs and vitamins? What is THEE truth about Spirulina? Thanks.

I take it myself, it seems people say it is good for you, but the "BIG companies" like the FDA and stuff say its not so good or the effects "don't have enought evidence".I am not sure what to believe either, but I think they are trying to hide this from us cause they make money from drugs. I take it anyways because the benefits outweigh the risks. Let's see what other people have to say about this. I am not sure what to do about that 500 mg pill thing, but I guess if nothing has happened to you it's ok. Why it says 1 pill I don't know.

Spirulina is a food supplement. It's not going to do anything miraculous, IMO. But is is a wonderful food supplement, like many green things God made. Within reason, the more you eat of it, the better off you'll be. Nothing wrong with taking 2 grams, which would be 4 of your pills. Probably the BEST way to take it would be to buy the powder and mix it into a green smoothie, or buy a drink powder that has it in it.

I think that pharmaceutical companies have no interest in promoting anything they don't make money off of, so of course they aren't going to do research on a food.

(BTW, every now and then one of the "big government companies" buys up a little natural food manufacturer. Not because they believe in the philosophy, necessarily, but because they recognize there is money to be made. For example, Ricola & Solaray.)

Several clinical studies in humans show significant health benefit using 2 grams to 7.5 grams each day. Some researchers are recommending 2 grams two or three times a day, with food, for maximum benefit. Dozens of animal studies suggest eating Spirulina, provides benefits over time at just 400mg per day equivalent in humans.
Because it cannot be patented, (it's a food not a drug), for profit companies cannot afford to pay for the expensive research. Big government has slowly funded some studies on Spirulina in the United States because science shows eating it protects the brain and the rest of the body from age-related deterioration, thus benefiting public health, thus saving the government big bucks on Medicare.
