In some cases, the fuel tank may have the capacity stamped on it,, or set on a tag on the tank. Otherwise, simply take the VIN of your truck to the dealership, and ask the service department to run the VIN and hand you the buildsheet. Most dealerships will not charge you for that service, and you will then have the information on what the truck came with. This can be useful for tank size, transmission and engine specs, ABS requirements, rims sizes, and much more. Good luck.

Check the owners manual if you have one, if not call a local chevy dealer. Chevrolet uses different sizes of gas tanks depending on truck engine and trim. Usually the K series used the 3/4 ton frame as is was a heavy duty built truck as opposed to the C-10

My '79 had a pair of 16 gallon tanks one on each side.

Could it be that your fuel gauge doesn't work any more?
If that is the case then you will have to figure out through trial and error how far you can go. You'll have to do that even if you know how many gallons your tank will hold.

26 to 31 gallons, depending on which tank was factory fitted. If you need to know exactly, fill a one gallon can and put it in the bed. Drive until you are out. Pour in the can full and drive to the station, and fill up. Read the number of gallons off the display, and add one to it.
