Every plumbing system by code is required to have 1, 3 inch vent with no reduction in size through the roof., not terminated in the attic. Your local codes may vary.

A 2" vent pipe is sufficient for a 4" pipe, a vent pipe is only required to be 1/2 the size of the pipe that it serves. If you can get into the attic and take a look around, look for a 3" pipe going out the roof, and make sure there are NO open vent pipes in the attic. If the vent terminates in the attic you will get sewer gas, which smells just like the name would imply.

the two previous answers are correct. Code changes frequently. It use to be required to have one 3" stack out of every house but in Fl. we are only required to have a 2" per branch now. If you have a 2" vent terminating in your attic, you will want to run it out the roof or install a studor valve on the pipe. It is better to run it out but if you want to save yourself the roof patching, install the studor. A studor vent usually glues right on to the pipe. They are around $20 -$30 and are available at most home improvement or plumbing supply stores. When you buy it you need to make sure you get one that covers enough DFU's (Drain Fixture Units) to cover the application. A plumber that knows code can tell you this by adding up the fixtures for this vent in your house. The studor vent lets air into the system when needed but closes to seal out sewer gasses from entering your house. They are commonly used where getting a vent out through the roof is not an option.

Building codes in California require the area of all vents to be at least the size of the drain line. If your drain is 4" then the total square inches of all vents must at least equal 12.6 square inches. All vents must go through the roof, not terminate in the attic.
