here are some types of fish that would be suitable with a betta:

Rainbow fish, white cloud minnow, tetras, danios, angelfish, rasboras and livebearers *except mollies, which benefit from brackish water. I also don't know that I'd put a betta in with fancy guppies, as it might confuse them with another betta. Shrimps can be good tankmates, but some bettas will eat the shrimp. Larger, non-aggressive tetras and barbs (adult Neon Tetras, Cherry barbs) make fine tankmates, as do plecostomus and many sharks, such as the bala or red tail shark (many sharks get quite large though, so be sure that you have enough tank space for the adult sharks).

As far as tankmate bottom feeders go, plecos, loaches or catfish are suitable. Corydoras (cory cats) are a common favorite. I enjoy Khuli loaches, although they are sometimes hard to care for. There's also a black Khuli loach, by the way.

The bottom line is that the best tankmate depends on the temperment of your betta. It may get along fine with one type fish, but another person's won't. Keep an eye on tankmates and be prepared to seperate if there are trouble signs (fish who are injured, stressed, hiding, chasing or harassing, etc).

Males and females should never be kept together. Doing so will more than likely lead to one of the following: A) spawning, B) fighting and fin damage, and possibly C) death, from damage inflicted by the other betta during the fighting. If you want to spawn your bettas, you need a proper setup, not a community tank. Spawning bettas can be read about here

I have a 30 gallon tank with a male Siamese fighting fish. He is in there with 2 angel fish, 2 bala sharks, three serpae tetras, 2 or 3 danios, and three small guppies. I have a pretty good mix in my tank. So far, they are all doing well. I haven't seen the fighting fish trying to attack anything or act aggressive. I think as long as there is a good mix and all the fish are about the same size, you should be okay. Just ask the person at the pet store to show you the "community fish". Those are the ones who get along well with most types of fish.

You can keep a surprising selection of fish - both small and large with siamese fighters. This is because siamese fighters they only tend to fight with their own type. Also, it is worth saying that only the males fight!

The siamese fighters will go well with tetras, danios, smaller catfish (such as corydoras), plecs, mollies, platies, loaches (esp. clown loaches), gouramis and swordtails.

Of the 'normal' tropical fish you find in most shops in the UK you should avoid cichlids and barbs. Also watch out for neon tetras as their bright blue colour can sometimes be seen as a threat to the fighters. Most other tetras are fine.

When purchasing fish - especially gouramis, mollies and swordtails make sure you get an even number of males and females. Ideally you should have more females than males - don't worry any good seller will easily identify between each sex!

I hope this helps a little.

Well this is a question with no exact answer, if anyone tells you otherwise they are wrong. Why? Because fish are like humans, some fish and humans can't stand another one. So one betta might get along with your other fish, while another male betta might kill all your fish. With this being said in general you can have one male fighting fish per tank, if you have two no matter how big the tank they will tear each other apart. If your tan kis big enough you can have several female fighting fish in there. As for tank mates, most of the time a male fighting fish will leave most other fish alone as long as he has space for himself. Stay away from chiclids or aggresvie fish as the betta will fight with them. But this is a general guideline, some bettas will fight with anyone and everything, but for the most part you are ok with having a male betta mixed with others. I have had over 10 male bettas and 8 of them 10 did find with other fish, 2 chased around the pretty male guppies non stop.

Hi, i have an aquarium myself and you can have a number of small tetra's including Neon Tetra's,Glow light Tetra's etc also Harlequin Rasbora are a nice fish to keep. If you have the male Siamese fighter make sure you purchase some females. Also DO NOT have any barbs as these will nip the big tail and fins of the siamese fighter, to hope this helps.

Siamese fighting fish - or bettas - are not aggressive to other fish as a general rule and make excellent additions to community aquariums. The only word of caution is to not get fish with extravagant fins - such as the fancy male guppy as the betta might mistake it for another male betta - with which it will be aggressive toward.

I have owned a few siamese fighters both male and female and have found them very peaceful with other fish spieces except other male fighters but i would be careful if you are putting neon tetras or other small tetras in the tank

Plenty neon's,guppies, mollies even silver sharks {lovely fish to have but beware...they're jumpers..open the tank lid and out they go } ! From past experience DON'T have Chiclids {Angel fish etc} . They killed my sharks and fighter. Also just keep one siamese and keep a close eye on water quality.

Usually a guorami or tetras will live peacefully. I have a tank with 2 albino clawed frogs, 5 tetras(neons and glo-lites), 1 blue guorami, 2 kuhlii loaches, and a male betta. They have lived peacefully for a few years now. Sometimes the guorami and the betta chase each other but it is because they are related and the betta will sometimes confuse him with another betta.
