I don't want to purchase Netnanny or Cybersitter or any of those things. Just want to change my computer's settings so that it won't allow me to visit these 3 specific sites. Will my changed settings work both at home and at work (when I plug my laptop into both locations)? Also...I'm not very tech-savvy, so any tips/instructions would need to be spelled out in detail. Thanks.

I followed the directions someone sent me to go to c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc and then type in 127.0.0.1 www.blockedsite.com and it totally worked! Thanks....but I'm trying to block my ex-boyfriend's personal site (which worked), but I'm also trying to block his My Space page (so I'm not tempted to check up on him). And that one didn't work. I used the www.myspace.com/HisUserName and it didn't work. I also went to his page, and copied the address and tried that (without www before it) and that didn't work either. I don't want to block all My Space stuff, just his page and a few of his friends. Can anyone help? Thanks.

You'll need to change these settings on which ever computers you'll be using, but wherever you connect those computer the sites will be blocked.

You can create an false entry in the Hosts file for the URL of the site. The Hosts file tells Windows where to find the site based on the URL, and if you tell Windows the wrong place it won't be able to find the site.

First you'll need to open the Hosts file - you should be able to find it in

%systemdrive%/windows/system32 /drivers/etc. If your computer is the way most are you can try going to C:/Windows/System32/drivers/ etc and finding "hosts" which you should then right-click on and choose Open. Select Notepad and choose Okay.

Once the hosts file is open in notepad add a line (Enter/Return key) under "127.0.0.1 localhost" - You'll want the line to look like this:

127.0.0.1 www.blockedsite.com

Note that you'll need different lines for each subdomain (where the www is). So you'd might need to do the same thing, with the 127.0.0.1, for site.com, downloads.site.com, and games.site.com. So you end up with:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 www.blockedsite.com
127.0.0.1 blockedsite.com
127.0.0.1 downloads.blockedsite.com
127.0.0.1 games.blockedsite.com

What that does is tells Windows that those sites are actually on your computer (127.0.0.1), but since they aren't you are unable to access them.

The best way to do this would be by editing the HOSTS file on your machine.

Let's say it was Yahoo you wanted to block as an example. Go to the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Note: that path there should end in \etc but the fcuking stupid Answers software is chopping the end of it for reasons I can't even begin to imagine.

In there is a file called HOSTS. Open it up with Notepad and add the following line to the bottom of the file:

127.0.0.1 yahoo.com

Then save the file. No web browser on your machine will now be able to access Yahoo until you take that entry back out of your HOSTS file again. Oh, and do simply *add* that extra line in there, don't delete anything that's already in the HOSTS.
