It is never a good idea to get someone a gift of an animal! Getting a pet is a decision that one has to make on their own. You can ask if they would like a pet and make sure that they would have the time and ability to take care of it properly...then go and choose one together. Now...i am guessing that you are not a child, nor your girlfriend.

now if you are a kid...heck no! First her parents wouldn't be too thrilled...plus, what happens in a couple weeks when you have both moved on and she still has that dang hamster named hulksterh...

what you could so though is take her out...take her on a walk...take her to the park...enjoy the day...take her to do something she hasn't done since she was a kid...buy her a nice plant...if she wears jewelry, buy it, but nothing too too much...simple...elegant...emerald earings...or whatever stone...stay away from the cliches....boquet of daisies...bag of oreos and some milk...hot chocolate gift pack...something to share and bond and remember good times to share with one another...borrow some classic movies...from the 80's if you grew up in the 80s...i could go on forever!

Give her a mouse or a rat. Heck, this IS the year of the pig! Hehehehe

Seriously, a girl would love a kitten more than anything, but make sure she's ready to accept the responsibility of caring for it. Some folks just don't really want to have pets.

You could check it out today. Animal Planet is showing "Puppy Bowl III" at 2PM Eastern/Pacific time today with the Kitty Half-time show. See how she likes that and you'll get an idea of which kind of dog or cat she would like, then you can easily ask if she would like one, or would want to care for one.

Pets are very cute as a gift but only if your girl like them and has enough time, suitable place, or so, to be able to take care of them well. By the way, pets could cause so much trouble. If she is not ready, rather not try it. But if she is, I suggest some extra stuffs to go with that special gift. Something like neck-let, tag, case, rug, clothes, depending on what type of pet. I think they are cute too, but don't spend too much, just pick one of those. ^-^
Good Luck

YES! I love getting pets as gifts... Betta fish with well decorated bowls make a great surprise. Also, if your girl is like me and prefers slightly more exotic animals I'd suggest a tarantula, scorpion, or hedgehog! A Hedgehog would be ideal. Just make sure you know if it's legal to have as a pet in your state or not.

A chinchilla would be cool as well. What's better than seeing those big loving eyes?

Make sure she can HAVE a pet if she doesn't own her house. If you give her a pet, give her the suplies or it will become a hassle and money consuming and not feel like much of a gift. That said, a kitten is much more doable than a puppy or something. Less expensive, less time consuming, and more cuddly.

I have 3 'pet' squirrels who come to my patio door each day looking for a snack and a shelter on my porch from the snow and wind:)

NO no no. A pet is a personal choice and should not be given to someone. What are you going to do with the pet if they don't like it or want it. Better to chose something inanimate.

No, never give a pet as a gift, ever, unless it is to your child who is under 18.
