shortyxxs' answer is nonsense. The reason it's bad is because the information on the hard drive itself is stored by magentizing the surface of the hard disk i.e. the data on your drive is stored as magnetic fields in a certain pattern. If you ran a magnet near a hard drive it would screw up the magnetization of the drive platter and effectively scramble all your data.

Your hard drive is held in place and protected by magnets. Hold a magnet near your system will move or alter the properties of the magnets inside and destroy your hard drive.

your hard drive writes the information it stores magnetically by polarizing it. Polarized one way it means a 1 polarized the opposite it means 0. If you get a magnet too close to your hard drive for a period of time it can repolrize areas of your drive causing you to lose info. and possibly to have to totally wipe the drive and start over.
