And how do they send it? The nearest Ikea is far from me, but the price of the item may be worth the cost of shipping.

When you place the order, the order will tell you how much freight will cost. But in the case of Ikea, an arm and a leg. Also, you may get someone else's order or items you didn't order. Assembly instructions are picture only, everything comes in pieces.

if you bought a piece of furniture then the company you bought it from will be able to tell you how much it would cost to ship it to you. Same as if you bought it online...just ask.

If, on the other hand a relative is sending you some furniture or you are moving and want to know the best way to send it, then contact a furniture moving company. There are many out there, some do large moves, some do small moves. If there is only furniture to be delivered then they can add that to someone elses load that's going to where the furniture will be going. Look in your yellow pages for "movers" and call and ask. Each area and state are different, and the charges are different for long and short trips.
