This sounds silly, but works. Pinch the septum, area between your nostrils, very hard.
Drink milk and eat bananas to prevent. Quinine works well, son the government had it pulled off the market.

I massage the affected area and, if a leg, I stand on it (not always easy) and try walking around. Eventually it goes away. (Sometimes it tries to come back....just keep working on it....it'll eventually go away.) I'd like to know what actually causes them....seems like I get them more after exersizing....like in the middle of the night.

Flex the next highest joint. If you have a cramp in your calf, for example, flex your knee.
Massage the cramped muscle.
Apply heat.

fyi - to avoid getthing them in the future (no idea now)...when you're next at your doctor have them check your hemoglobin - leg cramps can be caused by anemia/low blood

cramps are caused by a lack of potassium! eat bananas or take some extra potassium vitamins.
