*Keep in mind --- both expression should be in parenthesis.

(7y + 4) - (y - 10)

First: distribute the outer negative sign with the terms in the 2nd set of parenthesis...

7y + 4 - y - (-10)

7y + 4 - y + 10

Sec: combine "like" terms...

7y - y + 4 + 10

= 6y + 14
