Malaria can be quite serious. Anti-malarial drugs vary in their increased sensitivity to sun and alcohol effects.
While this should not be taken as a definitive answer-I took chloroquine without problem for my recent trip. I neither avoided sun nor alcohol.
My colleague just returned from a medical mission on the other side of the island (Haiti). One of the other physicians contracted malaria.

Oh there are Mosquitos here in the DR but... Malaria has only popped up a couple of time and no where near a tourist area.

Come to the beautiful lush North Coast when you come. It is lovely here. Leave the Malaria Meds home:)

I have lived here for 6 years and haven't heard of the first case on the North Coast of the DR!

Certain areas have had minor outbreaks of malaria. Recently 3 Canadians came down with it. Likely you won't need any meds but you can check out the CDC website or the State Dept Website for more info.

Have a great trip

I have lived on Hispaniola for six years and don't use malaria meds. If you use repellent, you shouldn't have a problem. Only certain kinds of mosquitoes carry it and only if they've bitten an infected person. So, if the infected rate is low, so is the chance of getting it. Also, the treatment for malaria is pretty simple, chloroquine for three days.
