There has been a South African grand prix, 23 have been run as part of the Formula One world Championship. The event has been canceled in the past due to government sanctions, when F1 did return in the 1990's however the Kyalami had been developed and did not produce great results and the promoter of the race went bankrupt.

Since 1993 when the race last run there has been talk and speculation about a return to South Africa. It was reported in 1998 Bernie Ecclestone talked with Mandela about government aid for a race, but nothing has come of it. There has been talk from Cape Town and talk from Durban about a street race, however no one has come up with the financing needed for a F1 standard track, and of course the money required to host a round of the F1 championship.

F1 is all about the money - and it talks loud and clear when huge amounts are offered from "emerging" countries wishing to raise their profile and or attract tourists. As an F1 enthusiast I think that the traditions are being lost and F1 is truning into a money making machine prostituted to all who are prepared to pay the asking price.

It's all about money.
@#%& Bernie sells F1 to "emerging markets" with no tradition at all but with a hughe pile of dollars.
What has F1 to do in Dubai, India or China?
Nothing.
Why is he putting races with decades of tradition at risk?
Because of money.
I became very disappointed when Ferrari signed the new agreement with him, undermining real car maker afforts to cut his power.
Bernie and Max Mosley have damaged F1 more than what we think.
Those stupid anti-Ferrari anti-Schumacher rules they have created (like an engine good for 300 races) will bring F1 to be a brainless sport like NASCAR.

Money and logitics. Nobody is offering the millions it takes to get teams to SA. South Africa is not an easy place to get to from anywhere and the fan base there is small.
