It means 41.

It works like this:

I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100

Basically you just write the numbers from left to right with the largest on the left until you get to one increment from moving up to the next.
Example: I=1, II=2, III=3........BUT it's IV for 4. This equates to saying "one less than five". Then V for 5.

Essentially whenever you see a smaller numeral in front of a larger one it means that you subtract it's value from the larger one.

Super Bowl XLI then reads like this: Ten less than 50 plus one, so 41. It takes getting used to, but it isn't too hard once you remember the symbols and get the rule down.

XLI = 41

Roman Numerals
I = one
V = five
X = ten
L = fifty
C = one hundred
D = five hundred
M = one thousand

Any of the above with horizontal line over it, is multiplied by one thousand example
_
M = one million

in the case of a letter being in front of a number then it is minus one example IV = five minus one or four
IX = ten minus one or nine
the letter with another behind it such as VI = five plus one or six
XLI = fifty minus ten plus one or 41

X=10
L=50
I=1
So X-L+I=41 remember when a smaller number is first it is to subtract.

It means 41.

L means 50, X means 10: since the 'X' is to the left of the 'L', it means you subtract from it. 50-10 = 40. The 'I' on the end stands for 1. Since it's to the right, it means add. 40 + 1 = 41.
