Honestly, the melody. I will love a song for its sound because at first listen I can't really hear the words or I hear them wrong. The song is made better or worse by the lyrics it has but the melody makes me generally like or hate it. If the lyrics are so terrible then I'll lose respect for a song but if the lyrics about something good -interesting- then I'll love it even more.

The sad thing is that now all the songs have really up-beat melodies but the songs are all about the same thing (love, girls/guys, sex/drugs) and a good beat can br ruined by the most pointless lyrics that make no sense.
What if a song with a good beat had lyrics 'playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home'. [What kind of line is that, I mean there are so many better things to say than THAT] That just ruins the whole song [and the chorus is bad too...]

Most of the time it's the words; music is poetry really...a lot of the time it's the combination of both though :)
