I never wear any with those athletic shorts or swim shorts that have mesh lined inside of them, but I always wondered...is the mesh supossed to act as underwear? Thanks.

Thats the whole point. It lets your little friends breath and eliminates sweat and rash. I wear them all the time in the gym. Beats the heck out of a soaked pair of briefs, plus to me, they are very comfortable and not binding..

Ive found the mesh to be very uncomfortable, I usually cut it out and wear cotton underwear.

That's the idea behind the mesh lining. If you look for well made shorts and swimwear the lining should be soft and comfy - not stiff and scratchy. This applies for mens, as well as women's clothes.

In swim shorts, yes. But I've never seen that with just regular athletic shorts. But I guess it would be the same, just never seen it. But that's a yes on the swim trunks.
