You see, similar questions are asked very often by people from developed countries who had never been to Bangladesh. The reason of high population density with so much poverty and problem at hand may be as follows:
1. Most of the people here are Muslims and practice Islam. The religion does not allow 'birth-control' the way it is done universally. Because, like the Catholics, Muslims are also against killing embryos at any stage. So, without the mass availability of birth control peripherals coupled with religious 'tolerance' to have children (for those who can afford to raise them properly), people tend to make a lot of 'mistakes' and newborn babies are unstoppable phenomenon.
2. Until recently the climate of Bangladesh was moderate and people could live under the sky or in a makeshift hut almost throughout the 4 seasons. This would make it easy for the downtrodden to have children even literally on the roadside footpath or in so many shantytowns around the major cities. So, there is no check on population explosion no matter how much the government and NGOs put their effort to curb the growth.
3. The fertile land and crisscross of rivers in Bangladesh made it easy to live simple life as farmer or fisherman and also some trade which can bring them enough money which is barely enough to have food and some clothing. This would make people feel that as long as they can sustain by working in fields or easy professions like Rickshaw-puller etc., they can have family and children.
4. The security at old-age is also a big factor among the lower-middle-class families who would look for more children as their Insurance in old age to look after them, even though a few may not survive due to disease or natural calamities.
5. Lastly, most of the people have never experienced life's amenities those people from developed countries take for granted. So, there is no need for poor people here to plan their future and go for saving money to have the 'luxury' of life. Therefore, the expectation from the life is lower here than in the West. Only 'recreation' is with the family and more specific having sex and producing more children.
This is a vicious cycle and Bangladesh is being helped by World Bank, ADB, UNICEF and such international organization to check population growth and some results have already been achieved by way of lowering the population increase per year below 2.0% which is one of the best among its neighboring countries. But, the actions were taken too late when the country already reached its saturation point a decade ago.
We are hopeful recently that the present Non-party Caretaker Government's most of the actions being taken could lead our country out of this dark abyss and even though we have more people per sq. km. basis, we would turn them into real workforce to reckon with in world setting (may be wishful thinking but what harm is there to be optimistic).
Population of Bangladesh: 141,822,300 (Rank: 11th out of 230 Country or Region)
Area (km²): 143,998; Density (Pop per km²): 985
Source: Latest figure from the World Bank Development Indicators Database is 1,090 per km²
