What is considered a true Gothic Cathedral was first seen around the year 1000. They were built by stone masons and the order of the Masons dates back to those buildings. It wasn't unusual for a cathedral to take several centuries to be built. The masons first used the system of arches to build the soaring ceilings that are so awe inspiring. However, one of the most impressive and latest is the Cathedral of St John the Divine built early 18th century in New York City. It was built using the ancient plans of the early stone Masons.
