well the oscar will be a big fish once grown. my oscars that i have had can get along with catfish and mollies. but reason being is that it was the molies/catfish tank and the oscar was too small for him to eat them. i had also added new mollies to that tank and the oscar just killed them. an african can go with a oscar but you got to make sure they are the same size and that you put them both in the tank at the same time.(they are aggressive and teritorial)
hope that helps you

perhaps... the area is how aggressive the Oscars are, and in the experience that they're a breeding pair. 2 men may no longer even stay together. difficulty is there is not any way of understanding what sex youthful Oscars are till they mature and both pair up or kill one yet another. Then in the experience that they pair up they could no longer tolerate the sharks. So that is a possibility, yet you may't be particular of it determining. One Oscar and 5 x Bala sharks can be a safer determination, and think with reference to the gap for that. a lot less chance of aggression, and the Balas will be happier in a better team. only ensure the Balas are a respectable length, and wont slot interior the Oscars mouth. Both of those species will easily gat over a foot long and both need plenty of tank space. The Oscar will get territorial and the balas are active swimmers. You will need a really, really big tank to house that group. I would say something on the order of 100 gallons or better in a long (6') format. As far as housing them together, as long as the balas won't fit in the oscars mouth they would be fine.
