When attached to a host (dog, ferret, etc), a flea can live as long as 6 weeks. Once detached, however (no more blood to feast on), the life expectancy reduces to approximately 7 minutes. Simply put, a flea is a very fragile creature, but is very tenacious in its feeding. Take away the food, kill the flea.
An intersting side note is that a flea does not posess the capacity for self restraint. In most situations, the cause of death for the poor flea is that it eats too much, and explodes. Every see a small blood spatter on your dog's belly? Thats why.

The average lifespan of a flea is 2-3 months as long as it has ample food supply, although in ideal conditions, it can live up to as long as a year and a half.
Without a steady food supply, fleas only live a couple days.

an adult flea lives for only 24 hours. biting and sucking blood from hosts. the eggs laid in carpets can lay dormant for 3 to 6 months and the larvae can live for weeks in the pile. so you have to treat the whole house every 3 months at least after an infestation

they live for 2 weeks, but they breed like a 12 year old on viagra, so even though there is a short lifespan, they will just stay around for a long time.

i dont know exaclty but i know they can lie dormant for quite a long time in a carpet or other material until they feel a living thing pass by then they will jump on to hitch a ride and a meal.
only way to geet rid of them is to treat carpets and pets
