I have a growing film collection but I havent many black films (e.g. Best Man, Hav Plenty, that sort of thing). I have Blade and Training Day (but thery arent really black films).
Can anyone recommend any? The classic ones as well as the more obscure ones. Going back the last 30 years. Blaxploitation recommendations would be great too.

Freddy, of course you can ask! A black film is a movie with an overriding black theme and/or features a predominantly black cast.

Posters please dont hate. This isnt a racist thing 99.9 percent of my collection features white people. Mainstream Hollywood. And I love my collection, but its unbalanced. However it nice to watch movies which have themes which are most important to black people. Its not a racist thing at all, so please calm down.
If you prefer me to use the euphemism "urban" i could have done but i am sure no-oe would have known what i was talking about.

Not really in to 'Black Movies' but i can recommend watching 'Big Momma's House'. Really enjoyed this film,
Also enjoyed a film called 'Glory', but not sure if it classifies as a 'Black' movie. Its about the 1st all black battalion in the union army. Denzil, Morgan Freeman, Matt Broderick, really good stuff.
Finally, got to mention Shaft (Samuel L Jackson), he's the coolest actor of the lot.

In The Heat Of The Night.
Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger are electrifying. One of the most intelligent films to tackle race issues.

The color purple well worth watching . An excellent film .
The Color Purple is the ninth film directed by Steven Spielberg, and was released 1985. It is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker. The film tells the story of a young African American girl named Celie and shows the problems faced by African American women during the early 1900s; including poverty, racism and sex discrimination. The character Celie is transformed as she finds her self-worth through the help of two strong female companions.

The Brother From Another Planet!
and "In The Heat of the Night" with Sidney Poitier
doesn't really have a large black cast but it's about how Mr. Tibbs gets accused of a murder while visiting family in the south. Great movie overall.
that's all the ones I can think of that haven't been mentioned already.

Mahogany with Diana Ross and Billy D. Williams is a really, really good black movie. Also look for movies made by Spike Lee like "The Best Man" (1999), "Girl 6" (1999), Get on the bus (1996) and "School Daze" (don't remember the year).
Best of luck
