Franklin Roosevelt who was even elected to a 4th term but died in office.

The only President to ever serve Non-Consecutive terms was Grover Cleveland and that was 2 terms total not 3.

FDR is only President to have ever been elected to more than 2 terms and that factor lead to the Term Limit idea.

Although because there is a 2 term limit there is an urban legend that one can be President only 8 years.

While it is true that 4 years is in a term and Presidents can serve only 2 terms, one can actually be President for 10 years total.

How is that possible.

If a President dies in office or resigns from office and the Vice President becomes President 2 years or less before end of term of precessor then he can run for 2 full terms.

For example had Bill Clinton resigned from the Presidency or been removed on January 20th, 1999 or after that date then Al Gore would have become President and been legally allowed to run in both 2000 and 2004.

Yes, Franklin Delano Roosevelt served four terms actually. He died during his fourth term and it was about this time that it was decided to limit the presidency to only two terms. George Washington was chosen for an undetermined term of office and he chose to step down.
