You should always have a router between your computer(s) and the internet. If you have a cable modem/dsl, then you have one internet address. You need a router to be able to share that connection. You also need a router if you want o access wirelessly.

That's the short answer, and what I would recommend though there are a number of much more involved ways of doing what you want.

You did not provide sufficient information.

Is your desktop connected to the Internet? (without a router?)

If so, the quickest way is to add a wireless router between the desktop and the internet broadband source (DSL or cable modem). Then your laptop can connect through the wireless side, and your desktop can go through the wired side (as more wireless routers have 4 ports in the back)

Do you realize that you left a LOT of information out that I have to assume? Please don't make me assume. It makes... better not get into that.

Yes you need a router or an internet card depending on the laptop.

Yes, that would be the easiest solution.
I have a Toshiba notebook also, and i'm using a Wireless Netgear router.

it is your settings on your lappy. examine your skill settings to make certain what occurs once you close up your lappy. you may change those to hibernate sleep or in spite of. My wager you've it set to the variety of settings the immediately disconnects.
