The current labour government has been in power for nearly 10 years. This is clearly too long. However, it's more to do with the obnoxious little sh1t in charge than anything else.

Strictly speaking first labours last on average 12 hours and second and subsequent labours about 8 hours. Second labours appear to go quicker because women tend to progress more on their own before going to hospital. There is a definite definition of labour and that is "the onset of strong regular contractions and dilatation of the cervix". Without both of these labour is not progressing. We all have all heard of women who have been in labour for 3 days or 3 weeks (hope not) but if they are not doing both of the above they are not in labour. So some women can have some very real pain but if they are not progressing they're not in labour. There is v. little you can do before labour starts to make it go quicker however there are some things you can do once it has started. These include staying mobile, for instance walking around as gravity helps the babys head descend the birth canal and keeps your pelvic bones nice and mobile also. Squatting also helps as it can widen the pelvic outlet, however it is something you need to have practised before labour as it can be tiring. Having a bath can help some women as it helps you to relax and if you are relaxed then your cervix will be more relaxed also as tense women are not just tense on the ouside. Of course these are all things you can do as long as there are no contraindications and your baby is coping well with the labour. There is a saying thats been used before and that is "get off the bed and off the monitor" as you really do need to stay a mobile as possible. Good luck and hope it goes okay.

Everyone is different i have heard of some labours going on 3 days
My first was 5 hours 2nd 3 hours 3rd 20mins 4th 90mins
i was fortunate because i walked a lot while i was pregnant especially in the last few days gravity does wonders, and when you do go into labour try having a walk about between contractions
goodluck!

that depends on the baby....my first little girl took 42 hours and 28 was established labour, not the quickest but then my friend had her first in 5 hours!.....you can only wait and see, try not to worry too much about it now as your time will come and the hospital will keep a close eye on you and help at the end if you need it. Everyones births are different and the second one is always different from the first...Good luck

The more active you are during labour the quicker it's supposed to be,but I'm sure it's just a case of when their ready.I've had labours lasting 8 hours at longest to 26 minutes from start to finish at shortest. There is no hard and fast rule as far as is known.
Good luck and a speedy and safe delivery to you ;o)

I just had my first baby three days ago and I was labour for 20 hours. And the contractions started at five minutes apart! Every labour is different. Your friend sounds like she's in a slow labour. But don't panic just because hers is slow, doesn't mean that yours will be

Labour can be anything to a few hrs to several days. My first was over 24 hours!! You can use a tens machine which you can hire from leading chemists or you can ask to use the birthing pool. Best thing to do during early labour is to try and relax perhaps sleep or go for a walk with your partner. Always remember to keep calm and don't be afraid to ask for help from the midwives

no theres no way to say how long it will take yes it can take a real long time and then other people only take a few hours if your worried ring the hospital and she if shes ok and as for yourself you will be ok. With my 1st baby i was in labour only 4 hours with my son 15 hours before i had emergency c-section so no 2 are the same
