In 1848, gold was discovered in a stream near Sutter's Mill in California. Word got out that gold was in the streams of California for the taking. People took boats to Panama and then up the Pacific coasts or came west on wagon trains through the Great Plains to set up a claim in the California territory, where they hoped to find lots of gold and strike it rich. So many came between 1848 and 1849 that California had enough people living in it to become a state in 1850.

Miners discovered that there was a lot, a lot of gold in California. They thought it was an only a little part, but then they started seeing that it was in several other mines, so workers and people from other places left their work and home to come mine to California. Some didn't find much. Or anything. Those people who came had stable jobs but they were so greedy, that they wanted more. So they came and found nothing. :]
