Today, there are several 24 hour news channels available by satellite and freeview (BBC News 24, Sky News, CNN,.Fox, Aljazeera etc.) These basically cover news and nothing else for 24 hours per day. If there is a major news flash, they interrupt whatever other news is on to give it full coverage. If it really is sensational (such as the events of 9-11 or the result of a General Election) almost everything else happening in the world is put on hold. The installation of a Pope is unlikely to be considered in that category in the U.K.
The traditional analogue channels like BBC1 ITV and Channel 4 normally only interrupt programmes if the programme controller thinks a particular news flash is so sensational it must be put out immediately. This will normally be done at end of current programme. Other Channels such as Sky Movies, in the case of really sensational news, will not interrupt nor broadcast the news item, but simply put out a caption advising those watching to check "your news channel" for a major item. In all cases the decision is normally made by the duty controller of the Channel.

When the TV station picks up on a story that they know will pick up millions of viewers, unlike the program they were just airing. The TV station will of course give the impression that the broadcast was interupted for 'our' benefit.

unsure these days. yet i be responsive to this...the BBC was customary for reporting each little thing. and that i undergo in ideas between the 'previous college' journalists (i think of john simpson..yet i'm so undesirable with names) asserting that on information station is unbias. every physique has political reason. yet in his opinion the coverage of the iraq warfare replace into coated superb via al-jazera (?spelling?). not that they've been completely independent, yet that they've been "much less professional-saddam than fox or bbc have been anti-saddam" btw... lower back i cant undergo in ideas the names, yet once you google cnn you will locate that they are controlled, r have been set up via a form of 'warfare monger' communities. completely propaganda. cnn for specific is rubbish edit...all of them are in the experience that i haent seen a information broadcast that isnt loaded in blatent opinion and so on from the information reader. not too until eventually now the reader could rfile the worst infant homicide case in historic previous...and then circulate on the the subsequent piece. now we've been given comments after, or now and lower back for the duration of, the rfile. its not even on the brink of independent anymore. you cant get an opinion on information you dont be responsive to roughly. yet beware heavily for the comments you do get for his or her loaded content cloth. dont pay attention to the techniques made and make your person ideas up the way you experience approximately it. doing that it the superb every physique can do

It's when they think the majority of the people are interested in the news alert.
If they don't cator to the majority they lose viewers....losing viewers is lost revenue....simple.
