My gas furnace is clicking and the pilot is lit but the furnace doesn't start. It just continues to click. It sounds like a small motor is running also. What could be wrong and what can I do?

Get out your wallet and call a service technician. This is one of those things that could go very wrong if you try to do anything yourself.

Here is your best accurate answer from and a/c and heat Tech of 20 years:
You have electronic ignition with spark ignitor. I say it is grounded properly if you are getting the sparking sound. Often poor grounding is a problem with these ignitors. Check the gas supply and make sure it is on. Just to insure that no air has entered the line, loosen the gas line at the connection nearest the furnace and purge gas out for about 10 seconds. MAKE SURE! there is no ignition source while doing this! Make sure the furnace gas valve is in the on position. Sometimes the pilot burner assymbly get corrosion in the orifice. Tap it gently with a screw driver to attemp to get corrosion out or remove it and clean it if your abilities allow you to do so. These steps should correct your problem. If not, you may have a pilot burner that is still clogged and needs replacement or you may have a bad furnace gas valve that needs replaced. Gas valves CONNOT! be opened and repaired! Good luck to you, hope you get warm again but not by flames in your face if you are not careful when purging!
ps: electronic spark ignition systems DO NOT have a thermocouple so do not waste your time looking for one. The spark producing device itself is the sensor that detects the pilot flame is lit and allows the main burner to come on.

You can replace the thermocouple yourself. Its almost always that in a pilot type furnace. Find a "wire" that comes from the pilot back to gas valve and unscrew it from the gas valve, then remove the thermocouple end from the pilot light holder.

Go to Lowes and get another thermocouple for about $7 The length is the only factor you need to know. So get the right length.

I had this problem at my former residence. TWICE. It is your electronic ignitor. It will cost about 100 dollars to replace including labor. HTH
