It says they are statements ...... read them

1. statement number 2 is true. .... true or false? ..... false !
2. statement number 1 is false .... true or false ?.... true !

these are statements .... point of fact .... not a question !! they are each giving you the answer to the true or false option of the other one only.Everything else is irrelevant.

quite a mind teaser though ...lol : )

It is an impossible question.

If we supposed that statement number 1 were true, then that would mean that statement number 2 would be true in saying that statement number 1 was false, which would in turn contradict that assertion that statement number 1 was true in the first place. Thus, statement number 1 could never be true.

If we supposed that statement number 1 were false, then that would mean that statement number 1 would be wrong in saying that statement number 2 was true, so statement number 2 would have to be false. But if statement number 2 were false, that would suggest that statement number 1 is true, which, again, contradicts our first premise that statement number 1 were false.

The last possible solution, then, is for both of the statements to be false. If statement 1 is false, then, as we said, statement 2 is also false. But if statement 2 is false, then statement 1 would have to be true, and furthermore, statement number 2 would have to be true. So even two falsehoods would not work.

But what about two truths? These obviously would contradict, because if statement number 1 is true then statement number 2 would be true in saying that statement number 1 is false.

Does your brain hurt yet? Good, mine too.

After all of this, we can only conclude that this question is a trick, or an impossible question.

In order to answer that correctly, with no confusion, the order of the statements would need to be reversed........Anyway, the first one is agreeing with the second one that it, the first one, is false.
