water turtle- feet are webbed, shells are flatter
land turtle- feet aren't webbed, shells are raised up or rounded up more
Do you have a pic of the turtle? It'd be easier to tell if you did

Water turtle - Webbed feet ( painter turtles, red eared sliders)
Land Turtle - none webbed feet ( box turtles and Tortoises)
All turtles need water and land. Some just need more of one then the other.
With a water turtle you will need a lot more supplies and care then a land turtle. Water turtles need a BIG tank with a filter and water heater. They also need a place to climb out of the water to bask under a proper light.
Land turtles need a BIG tank as well. They need majority land with water they can go into that covers their entire shell. They also need a proper light. As well as plants and a place to hide on land.

A good way to tell is if the shell is a dome- shape. A dome is probably a land turtle, while the flater ones are water turtles. Aso, see if the toes are webbed or not, webbing meaning a water turtle. Another good way to tell is by offering it water and land, and then see what it feels more comfortable in. I am good at Identifing turtles, so if you want, email me at codeylol@yahoo.com and give me a description of your turtle.

The only specific land turtles are tortoises. All other turtles need both land and water. A turtle needs water so he doesn't dry out but he needs land because he breaths air.

Well first things first: MOAT TURTLES LIVE IN THE WATER AND THE ONES THAT LIVE ON LAND ARE USUALLY CALLED TORTOISES!!!
OMG if you own a turtle and don't know if its a land or water one YOU ARE IN BIG DEEP TROUBLE!!! I can't believe that some people just go ahead not knowing anything about their new pets not even what kind of enviornment they live in they have no respect for the creatures and cause them unjust and unruly suffering and punishment for no good reason! Tutles and Tortoises need both land and water but water turtles need more water than land (usually about 75% water) and tortoises need more land than water (about 80% land)
1. look at its shell, is it roung and big (land TORTOISE) or flatter and streamlined? (water TURTLE)
2. Are its toes webbed, built for swimming? (water TURTLE). Or do the toes look like they are built for digging in the earth for food like grubs ect. (land TORTOISE!).
3. A land TORTOISE usually has rough skin while a water TURTLE usually has smooth skin.
4. What kind of food does it eat? If it eats grubs, worms, insects, and roots then it is probably a land TORTOISE. If it eats water larve, fish, tadpoles, and can only swallow their food UNDERWATER then it is a water TURTLE.

If you have a tank for your turtle, make sure he has a little pond to the right or left side. After a few days if he goes in the water or not, you'll know. If he goes in the water alot he likes water. If he doesn't he doesn't like water.

Post a pic before that turtle dies! Box turtles also only need a water dish.
