We posted an ad for a car and got a reply by e-mail saying he would send us a check for 1,200 dollars more, because it was a refund check on a car he returned or something, and we just send the balance back to him. I knew it was a scam right away.

I'm not stupid, but I know people who are and could possibly fall for something like this. It's my first experience with a scam of any kind it's kind of exciting, I wanna bust the guy. Wrestle him to the ground and cuff em, and stuff em!!

It is a well known scam. That is also the way the "will you be my agent" scam works. You are sent a check where you keep a percentage and send the rest out. Of course the check bounces.

It happen to me. I posted an ad to sell something on Craigslist. This guy emailed me from Texas and said he saw the ad and wanted it, could I ship it to him. At first, I said no. But then he said he would send me a check for the item plus more for shipping and that if there was any money left over, I could just forward it on in a money order to him. I figured that would be easy since I wouldn't have to go to the post office twice at that point. Then the check came for $3000.00. The item was only $900. I went online and searched the routing number from the cashier's check. It was fradulent. I called the number and reported it. I wrote the guy an email and told him he was a fraud. He actually called me and yelled at me and told me I better give him his money or he would hurt me. I called the police.
It's amazing how brash people are when THEY are the ones screwing you over. Trust no one when it comes to your money! I guess the scam was that I would stupidly cash the check in my bank account, use the rest to ship it, refund the rest with a money order and then a week later, when the original check bounces, you are out the item you sent plus all that money. Nice people out there!

I was looking for a job on career builders and there was a posting for a work from home for a Art Gallery compnay. They emailed me back to my response and wanted me to fill out my infor for the job. I would do some work and the checks would come to my house from the buyers and I would cash them, keep $600.00 from each check for myself and send the remaining balance to the boss in a money order or western union. It is a scam becuase The checks would be stolen and If I cashed a fake check I would have to pay it all back and a money order is practically untracable and I would be sending thousands to this person and I would have to pay it all back and I would go to jail when htey caught me but hte other person would never be caught and have free money and my life would be over

Congratulations! You passed the test. You are NOT an idiot! Unfortunately, many people do not pass this simple idiocy test and it costs many people millions a year in idiot fees! Any time someone offers way more than they need to or is way too accomodating, call a "time-out" and really start your brain engines. Taking time and being patient is an important part of the art of a deal.

Mr. Daverino ... Way to go, buddy. We're all glad you didn't fall for it. As you said, though, some honest believing people might have fallen victim to ones just like this.

I've heard of it. I can't believe some people would actually fall for that one though. Good move not buying into it.
