You know you have different kinds of depression such as clinical depression which can be treated medically. As far as the other kinds, they say depression is anger turned inward and that people don't know how to express their feelings and hold it all inside. Everybody gets the blues at one time or another due to the loss of a loved one or a heartbreak but the fighters always come out on top by refusing to have a pity party and feel sorry for themselves. In other words they get over their problems and deal with them head on and pull themselves up by the bootstraps. Yes it seems these days that more people are depressed because of various reasons the main one being the failure to let go of their problems and living and enjoying the life that the Good Lord gave you!

Living in a country where you are told as a kid that work doesn't mean squat will do that to you! When most Americans get to the real world, they realize that they DO have to work-and possibly work HARD-in order to succede. So they get all angry about it as a result. Or "depreesed," as the politically correct would say. That's all depression is, being angry because you were fed a silver spoon as a kid and now that silver spoon is gone!

And if it's not that, then you are going through the EXPECTED social cycle of "marry when you're 20 and divorce when you are 30." Close to 60% of Americans go through it, and I'm sure that that would make one hurt and resentful!

If you let good morals guide your life, have confidence in yourself, and don't fall victim to the deadly "romantic love" trap, you will be a "glass half full" person!! I know I'am!

By the way, when I say the "romantic love" trap, I'm NOT saying don't get married! I encourage you to get married and have kids! I'm just saying to be smart about it! "Romantic" love is a feeling that you get when courting somebody, and that feeling can be ignited whenever you believe that you can "live with this person and share a family with them." However, that feeling WILL NOT get you through the entirety of marriage! As is proven by the divorce rates! TRUE love happens when you believe that you CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT that person! There's plenty of people that you can LIVE with, but can you LIVE WITHOUT them? If you can't then you don't have true love, and you're marriage is in trouble!

I think people might get that impression, but I also think it's because of two significant items: 1) greater awareness of what depression is, and 2)the relative ease with which you can obtain these drugs, meaning there are people taking them that don't really need them.

One night, as we were watching a commercial for one of the newest anti-depressants, I jokingly asked my wife,"so, what do I have to tell the doctor to get some of that?"

She answered,"didn't you watch the commercial; they just told you."

She meant that all you had to do was go to your doctor and complain about the symptoms shown in the commercial, and chances are, you'd get a prescription.

How do you account for the overwhelming amount of presecriptions for the drug Ritalin? I think too many kids aren't getting structured supervision by their parents, so they don't learn certain social skills. Later, they become a distraction in the classroom, and teachers and parents cop out by drugging the kid.

The real reason is that we have too many low expectations of ourselves. We have become a nation (through television, video games and compters) who are lazy and unambitious. 100 years ago we did not see farmers depressed because it was not raining. They were too tired from working sun up to sun down and then coming in and trying to figure out what plan B was going to be.

My Doctor had an interesting take on that. He believes that at this particular time in history, the human brain is evolving intellectually much faster than it is emotionally. We are having a much harder time to emotionally cope with a much faster, almost hyper, multi- task technology world we live in.

He also notes that people from 3rd world countries with little or no technology, don't have the emotional ailments anywhere near that of modern country's, albeit they fare physically much worse because of poor nutrition, bad sanitation, and lack of decent health care.

I know there are a lot of people who claim it as a self diagnosis. I wonder if its just something people use to excuse their approach to life, their inability to figure out how to pursue fulfillment and happiness. I'm not Tom Cruise I understand there are people who have a chemical imbalance too who are clinically depressed but I think a lot of people are just doing the cool disease of the era to excuse not living at full throttle.

Yes, it does seem as such.
I think it's because people have such high expectations of the world and themselves and people around them. When things don't go their way, even once, it destroys them. They put such importance in things that don't really matter. They measure their value by the things they own. When they don't feel adequate or something of the sort, they sink into a pool of sadness and inadequacy.

It's sad :(

yup, I think it's because in these days everyone is either backstabbing, cheating, or liying and only thinking about themselves. There are some good people left but not much, I would blame it on popular culture but I guess it wouldn't be in popular culture if the country as a whole didn't want it to be there.

I used to be depressed but now I am happier than ever. I guess it was because I stopped feeling sorry for myself and got a life.
