fantastic question. love that so many people can't spot a wind up. they should not even be on the bus in the first place due to the awful smell they create. walking keeps them fit and prolongs life.

Because its the right thing to do, as u get older ur body becomes more worn and tired and u get lots of things wrong with u, its hard to walk to the back of the bus when its moving like that and to stand. If u fall down u will more than likely just get a bruise if they fall down they will probably break a hip. Also they have done all there days of hard graft and are now retired because their bodies are no longer capable of going to work everyday.
And finally its respect and if we cant respect each other as a country what kind of country are we going to have???

As people have already pointed out respect, and hopefully when you're old and the "womble round the shops" you've been out on has taken it out of you, you are exhausted, probably been treated like a second class citizen by shop assistants and people in the streets, worked out how to stretch your pension to afford the basic amount of food you can afford to pay for and still have enough money to treat your grandchildren to a birthday present, not forgetting the effects old age has on the health (arthritis etc.) somebody will give up their seat for you to make your life a little bit easier.

I am dismayed at the lack of respect for older people. I think they have a right to sit when a younger fitter person is parked on a seat and theres no place for them. Would you be annoyed if someone talked about YOUR grandma like that? Of course you may be the type who just disrespects EVERYONE older. What you dont realise, or dont care about , is that those older people have lived a long life, worked hard, brought children into the world and contributed to society, and thats without mentioning the war and what they did for future generations. Its sheer ignorance to think they are just a bag of bones, and that they dont deserve consideration. What kind of person are you anyway. I'd guess Ignorant.

Yes it annoys me too. It annoys me that they have all day to do what they want but they HAVE to get the 8.30 bus when people are trying to get to work and you have to stand up all the way there before doing a full days work and find that they are filling the 5.30 bus up again when I could do with sitting down on the journey coz I've just done a full days bloody work!

The tradition is there because it is a show of respect. They are the ones who have made the world for your sorry a** to live in. It isn't perfect, but it is a lot better than it ever has been.
They are also the ones who infuence who hires who in business. That old person on the bus is probably not the CEO of your company, but he/she might know the CEO personally. Want to pi** him off by not offering your seat? LOL
The practical reason is that many old people have medical problems that make them unstable on their feet or they get pains from standing too long. I'm not old, but I have an injury that mades it so I cannot stand for very long in one place without a lot of pain.

It's a matter of respect and common courtesy. I am sure that when they were younger, they gave up the bus seats for people too. Well, once there was buses. Besides, they usually have a harder time getting around and it is harder on their bodies to stand up than it would be for us.

I think its polite to give up a seat to someone who is infirm, on crutches, pregnant, struggling with a toddler. In fact anyone who looks as if they need it more than I do. Given up my seat for a teenager once, she was very upset and trying to hide the fact that she'd been crying. Nothing to do with respecting others, more to do with having self respect!

Because you are much younger and older people may have trouble standing for long periods. I mean, why do you need to ask this? And yes, the previous answerer was right when they replied with 'respect'.
One day you will be old and perhaps by then you'll be able to understand.

Otherwise you will find yourself wasting time, climbing over a pile of them, to get off the bus. They have no sense of balance and tend to collapse as the bus goes round corners. Makes it difficult, especially if you've got to drag your pushchair over them. And the noises...........
Seriously though, you must have been born without a decency gene, if you have to ask at all. Try living on £100 a week and still get around.
