I need to reinstall my windows xp because of extremely slow activity and constant non responsive programs. But I don't want to lose any downloaded video clips, music and resumes. How would I do this? Someone told me to do a system overwrite. What does this mean? Can any one help?

I think your friend means System Restore, which is launched from the Help and Support item under your Start menu. You choose a date when your system was behaving properly, and restore to that point. Only your operating system is affected, and your changes can be reversed if you don't like what happens.

I've used this utility several times, and never had any problems.

Good luck.

an overwrite is where you install windows over the top of your existing windows, you just put the CD in drive and double click or select setup. I partially agree with another responder who said to check for ad aware , spy ware and viruses because doing an overwrite will probably not correct your problem. you can get free virus scan AVG 7.5 from http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1

get ad aware from http://www.lavasoft.com/

get spy-bot search & destroy from http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html

you can also get a free registry cleaner/optimizer at http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

do all your scans and see how your computer runs.

also you can clean your files out by clearing the internet history and do start search for *.tmp and deleting all the tmp files

after doing the delete go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defrag.

all this will take longer than overwriting but will probably be more effective in solving your problems.

They probably mean a system repair, and that is done by inserting the system disk.Choose repair at the prompt. Having said that, I do not have good luck with that. You are probably better off with a disk check for errors and good adware and spyware scans. I use CCleaner, and use the issues tab. ERUNT has a registry tool that will back up and optomize your registry. Safe, as you can restore from it. Those 2 programs will probably do you a lot more good.

first of all you might not have to reinstall windows. do anti-virus scan, anti-spyware scan, then use a registry cleaner/compressor to improve speed.

system overwrite i guess means formatting your hard drive.. which means wiping it out blank and then you could reinstall windows, which isn't very hard but you'd lose all your data. so before that, you could back up all your stuff on cd's but of course that's kind of a hassle.

when u go thru the steps to install new windows.......ur gonna come to a point where it says format using ntfs of fat32 or the last option is the one u want."over write w/ no changes"......but i would consider cleaning out my pc first, sounds like its just cluttered...run ewido (www.ewido.com)....ccleaner get that at download.com....even defraging ur pc will make a big improvment on speed if u havent done it....files could be all over the place.....goodluck
