My Dad's Car's Speed 1 and 2?

Its not a stick car, but it has the following
Park, Rev, Neutral, Drive, 1,2
What are the 1 and 2 for?

First and second gear. 1 will only engage first gear, and 2 will engage first and second. D allows all gears, first through fourth. 1 and 2 is generally only used for power or reduced traction driving, such as snow or mud, where the pause in power needed to upshift can get you stuck.
