On my DVD Recorder it has modes for
1hr extra high quality
2hr standard quality
4hr long-play mode
6hr extra long-play mode (compatible playback on most players)
8hr extra long-play mode (not all players able to cope)
And a flexible recording mode that, providing the length of time specified is less than that left in lowest quality mode, will use-up what is left on the disc (using variable bit-rate). The 6hr & 8hr modes give the same visual quality but offer two levels of sound quality.
I find the 8hr mode is fine recording off digital TV, and have had no problems with playback on DVD players I've tried

wondergeek is right:
hq will give 1hour
sp 2 hours
lp 3 hours
elp 4 hours.

But my Panasonic DVD -R recorder also has an Extended recording format that saves 6 hours.

it will be a 4.8gb disc.....the time to recoed on depends on the " quailty " setting

hq will give 1hour
sp 2 hours
lp 3 hours
elp 4 hours.

if you are recording a programme in digitial less then 2 hours go for sp.
