Newfoundland acquired thee name in English from the "discovery" by John Cabot in the late 15th cen. Vikings first, then the Portuguese, Basques, then the English. See above. Not really English but an Italian working for England.

Sir Humphrey did found a colony there in the late 16th cen. with Letters patent from the Crown. It was already occupied with Portuguese and English fishermen when he arrived. His ship and he dissapeared on the trip back.
