As dressmaking is an art it is difficult for a beginner to learn anything from a book. You'd be much better off attending a local evening class to get a good solid understanding of the basics where someone can carefully explain anything you are unsure of.

I'm not trying to be funny or mean, but I'm pretty sure that there is a book called "Sewing for Dummies" that will give you a head start. Honestly if you don't have a lot of experience I'd check out the local fabric stores and see if they offer classes. If you start with the easy sew patterns and gradually work your way up, you should do fine. Good luck! Simplicity offers a series of patterns called "sewing for dummies" as well. If you do a search on yahoo for "sewing for dummies" you'll get a ton of info there! Good luck!
